Baking cookies on a silpat makes it a breeze. You can usually wipe it clean but they can get some grease and baked on food stuck on them. So, the question is, are silpats dishwasher safe?
Are Silpats Dishwasher Safe?
The short answer is yes. We place ours on the top rack and have not had an issue. Silpats are made from a fiberglass reinforced food grade silicone, which means they are in fact dishwasher safe! Some inferior mats are made from plastic are not dishwasher safe.
You can often determine if yours is dishwasher safe by checking the bottom of it or the packaging! If it is dishwasher safe, there will be a symbol on the bottom that informs you of such. If you do not see a symbol, it’s better to be safe by not putting it into the dishwasher!
What Are Silpats Made From?
They make silpats from silicone with a fiberglass reinforcement! Silicone is a non-slip material often used in kitchenware. It’s similar to rubber but is non-toxic and safe for use with food. Silicone is an easy to clean, heatproof up to 480 degrees, and freezer proof material that can be used in a wide variety of areas in the kitchen!
How Do You Clean Silpats?
As we mentioned before, you can place them on the top rack of your dishwasher! You could also handwash silicone silpats though if you do not have a dishwasher or just prefer handwashing! Simply rinse off the mat to remove any build up of dust or debris. Then, using hot water and gentle dish soap, wipe the mat to remove any residue! You can use a scrubby to get off anything that sticks, give it one last rinse, and then let it dry!
How Often Should You Clean Silpats?
We clean our silpats after each use to keep them looking new. However, this depends on the frequency of use and what you’re using it for! Some prefer to just wipe them down to get the food residue off them.
How do You Dry Silpats?
Silpats are very easy to dry. If possible, Try hanging the drip mats somewhere as this allows for even and quick drying! We clean them last and just lay it over the clean dish pile to dry.
How Long do Silpats Last?
Pending how well they are taken care of, silpats can last years before needing to be replaced. Make sure you are cleaning them regularly and using them according to their guidelines and instruction to prevent damage. If you notice any of the following ware and tare signs, it may be time to replace your slip mat!
- Burnt material
- Holes in the mat
- Tares in the silpats
- Thinning of the material
- Residue that will not come off
Any of these traits can mean the mat has been overused or misused and it’s time to replace it! These traits are rare if the mats are used correctly and taken care of properly.
To store them, we roll them up an slide them into a used cardboard paper towel tube.
